Consonant Digraph Word List

In this download, we focus on five consonant digraphs: wh, sh, ch, th, and ck. These are some of the most common consonant digraphs.ย

Digraphs are two letters that make one unique sounds. They are sometimes introduced in kindergarten, but most phonics programs typically introduce digraphs in 1st grade.ย

The PDF list of words with digraphs has been organized to make finding the right digraph word quick and easy. Each page has a specific digraph. These words are even further divided into words that begin with a digraph or words that end with a digraph.

The digraphs word list below includes words with both long vowels and short vowels. Simple CVC words and words with blends are included in this list of words with digraphs as well. The list includes some vowel teams.

What is a Digraph?

what is a digraph

A digraph is when two letters that are next to each other make one single sound.

For example, in the word “chop,” there are three sounds in this word: /ch/ /o/ /p/. The sound /ch/ is a digraph, meaning it is two letters that create a new sound.

In this post, we are only discussing consonant digraphs. Vowel digraphs are an important phonics skill. If you are interested in learning more about vowel digraphs, make sure to check out this post.

Let’s talk more about these common digraphs below.

WH Digraph Word List

There is an important thing to note about the digraph “wh.” The digraph “wh” will never come at the end of the word. It will only come at the beginning of a word.

The digraph “sh” does not have any unique spelling rules, unlike some other digraphs. It can appear at the beginning of a word or at the end of a word.

CH Digraph Word List

Just like the “sh” digraph, the “ch” digraph does not have any unusual spelling rules. It can also appear at the beginning and again at the end of a word.

A special spelling rule to remember about the digraph “ch” at the end of a word. If the /ch/ sound follows a short vowel, you will use the trigraph “tch.” So you are still using that “ch” digraph, but you need that “t” in front of it.

Here’s an example:  witch

Because there is a short vowel “i” in this word, you need to use the trigraph “tch” at the end.

Ck Digraph Word List

The “ck” digraph will never be at the beginning of a word! You will only see the “ck” digraph at the end of a word/syllable.

How do you know when to spell with the “ck” digraph? This is a great question!

You will use the digraph “ck” at the end of a word/syllable after a short vowel sound.

How to Use the Lists

These digraph word lists are great resources because they are so versatile. You can use them in many different ways. Let’s talk about some ways to use these lists.

Phonics Practice

To practice reading these words, you can write them on index cards to create your own flash cards. A dry-erase board works great also! As your child is reading, ask them specific questions. It’s an easy phonics game.

You can ask them questions like this:

“Where is the digraph?”

“Is the digraph at the beginning or end of the word?”

“What’s the ending sound? Beginning sound?”

Have your child mark the digraph by underlining it.
